The authorities of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) have shutdown the university until June 24 following a factional clash between two groups of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men in the early hours of today.
Dr Ashutosh Saha, director (student welfare) of CUET, said they had asked the male students to leave the dormitories by 3pm and the female students by 9am tomorrow to prevent any further violence.
“All the classes and examinations at the university will remain postponed until June 24,” he said adding that the decision was taken in an emergency meeting held at around 8:30am.
Two rival groups of the BCL, known as Mosleh and Pavel, were locked in a violent clash in front of the campus’ Shahid Mohammed Tareque Huda Hall in at around 1am.
The fighting was as a result of a power struggle between the groups over supremacy on the campus.
However, Rashedul Abedin Chowdhury, general secretary of the CUET’s BCL unit, said the two groups are not part of the BCL’s university committee and the clash resulted from personal tensions between members of the groups.
Mohammed Nayeb, a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student and member of Mosleh, was injured during the fighting and had to receive treatment at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
