Schools and colleges are likely to reopen soon as coronavirus infections have started to come down, says Education Minister Dipu Moni.

Her remarks came on Friday in Sylhet during a discussion with the leaders of the ruling party’s northeastern district unit.

After a shutdown of a year and half due to the pandemic, educational institutions reopened in Bangladesh for in-person classes on a limited scale in September last year.

However, on January 21 this year, the government announced the closure of educational institutions temporarily with coronavirus cases rising since December due to the highly-infectious Omicron strain.

Initially, schools and colleges were to remain closed until February 6, which was later extended by two more weeks to February 21.

Dipu Moni went to Sylhet on Friday to meet protesting students of the Shahjalal University of Science (Sust), who demand the removal of the vice-chancellor.

The government is trying to resolve the problems Sust students are facing, she said before adding: “Students also have responsibilities when it comes to solving these issues. All concerns can be solved through discussions.”

The majority of public universities in Bangladesh have faced problems similar to Sust at one time or another. "We will take initiatives to address these issues as well," she said.

Education Minister Dipu Moni, Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, and Expatriates’ Welfare Minister Imran Ahmed landed at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport at 8:50am on Friday.

The three are scheduled to hold a discussion with students, teachers and various organizations of the university from 4pm to 7pm in a bid to resolve the ongoing crisis at Sust.
