Notre Dame College can now hold the admission test of students of class XI for the academic year 2013-14 after the High Court Sunday stayed the operation of a notice issued by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka in respect to Notre Dame College, said a press release by lawyers of Notre Dame.
The press release said: “With the issuance of the rule and the interim order of the stay the Notre Dame College would be able to hold admission test for the admission of students into class XI for the academic year 2013-2014.
“The system of admission being imposed by the Ministry of Education on Notre Dame College would deprive the college authorities of their power and right to select deserving candidates for admission in the college.”
It also said Justice M Moazzam Husain and Justice Habibul Gani issued a Rule Nisi upon the respondents to show cause as to why the process of admission set out by Board of Intermediate and Secondary education, Dhaka notifying an arbitrary and non-transparent procedure for the admission of students into class Xi for the 2013-2014 academic year shall not be declared to be without lawful authority and is of no legal effect.
When contacted chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Prof Taslima Begum told the Dhaka Tribune the board would talk to the attorney general to decide on its next course of action.
The government recently issued a guideline for the admission of Higher Secondary courses, which stated that students should be admitted through an online/SMS process that would be conducted by government authorities without any involvement of the college authorities.
The guideline also made it mandatory to reserve 2% of the total seats for the children of the employees working in the education ministry and its subordinate offices.
Notre Dame College authority raised objections about the guideline and filed a writ petition with the High Court.
