The government has hinted at the possibility of the primary education completion (PEC) exams for fifth graders not being held this year.

“This test is not part of the new curriculum that will come into effect,” State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossain told a media call on Thursday.

He said that a final decision would be made after discussions with education experts.

“Schools remained closed for nearly two years. We need more time to recover the learning losses,” he said, adding if the tests were indeed held, an announcement would be made at least two to three months ahead.

Recently, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni also hinted that the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) exams were likely to be cancelled given that the boards would have their hands full with the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

Meanwhile, Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Aminul Islam Khan said: “The learning process is different for adults and children.

“We do not want to disrupt the natural process by making any announcement now. We will take a little more time.”

Primary Education Director General Alamgir Mohammad Mansurul Alam said that currently students should focus on learning.

“We do not want to trouble them with exams when they should be honing their learning capabilities, especially since these exams (PEC, JSC) will not be there in the future curriculum,” he added.
