The Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League is staging a protest on the campus over the alleged negligence of the university authorities in a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Chhatra League unit has been staging the protest since the sculpture was unveiled last year. So far, the RU authorities have not responded to the protest.
Sources said the RU authorities undertook a Tk61-lakh project to sculpt a monument that features the busts of Bangabandhu and three RU teachers who were martyred during the Liberation War in 1971 - Dr Sukhranjan Samaddar, Dr Habibur Rahman and Mir Abdul Quaium.
When the monument was unveiled, it was found that the bust of Bangabandhu was in a lower position on the monument than the other three busts.
This issue brought on the ire of the Chhatra League, who started protesting on social media and then staged rallies.
The protest continues till date, yet the university authorities have stayed mum about the matter.
Chhatra League's RU unit President Md Ibrahim Hossain has warned that if the university authorities do not fix the monument and show proper respect to the father of the nation, they would launch larger protests on the campus.
The Dhaka Tribune contacted RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan, but he did not make any comment on this matter.
