The government has published revised syllabuses for this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC), Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations in the face of criticism from examinees and teachers.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka issued separate circulars signed by Prof SM Amirul Islam, controller of examination at the board, in this regard on Thursday.

Earlier on January 25, the board published the curtailed SSC and HSC syllabuses rolled out by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).

On January 27, the Education Ministry decided to revise the shortened syllabus amid criticism from students and teachers.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, at a meeting with the NCTB chairman and other officials and teachers involved with the syllabus, asked to prepare syllabuses that could be completed in three months for SSC and four months for HSC and equivalent examinations.

NCTB officials said students, parents and teachers informed the education minister that the curtailed syllabus could not be completed within the allotted time of three or four months.

In the meeting, the minister asked the relevant authorities to prepare a short syllabus within a week to make sure students developed core competency in the subjects and became eligible for the next class.

SSC and equivalent examinations are likely to be held in June this year while HSC exams in July or August if the Covid-19 situation becomes favourable.

Educational institutions across the country have been closed since March last year due to the pandemic. The government extended the shutdown of all the educational institutions, except Qawmi madrasas, a number of times until February 14.
