The British examination boards Pearson Edexcel International has announced on Wednesday that its international exams would not go ahead as planned this summer.
Earlier, OxfordAQA cancelled exams for the May/June 2021 series.
Pearson Edexcel has cancelled International GCSE and International AS/A Level exams for the May/June 2021 series. Students will instead receive teacher assessed grades, says British Council’s website.
Pearson will offer an additional exam series for International GCSE later in 2021 and the International AS/A Level October exam series will go ahead as planned.
“We will use a robust approach based on teacher assessment for International GCSE and International AS/A level assessment in May/June 2021 and exams will not go ahead as planned,” the exam board posted on their website on Wednesday.
The UK had announced early in January that British GCSEs and A levels would be cancelled, but the international exam boards initially said their exams would still go ahead.
The change of heart on Wednesday came after they had spoken to many schools around the world and consulted all options, Pearson said.
On January 28, OxfordAQA, a major UK examination board, said it would have been impossible to go ahead as planned because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Weeks ago, UK Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove announced that board exams, including GCSEs and A-levels, would be cancelled this year.
Students in Bangladesh will be affected by the decision as many sit a combination of GCSEs and International GCSEs, A-levels and International A-levels.
Meanwhile, Cambridge exam board has not yet announced whether its international exams will now also be cancelled.
This will be the second year in a row that grades are awarded based on teacher assessments due to the pandemic.
