A decision on whether educational institutions will reopen after November 14 or the holidays extended will be taken in the “next couple of days,” Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam has said.
The cabinet secretary made the remark while briefing reporters at the Secretariat after the weekly cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting virtually from her official residence, Ganabhaban.
Educational institutions in Bangladesh have been closed since March 17 in order to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Apart from Qawmi madrasas, all educational institutions have been declared closed till November 14.
On Monday, when asked whether educational institutions would open after November 14, the cabinet secretary said: “The Ministry of education will inform you in the next couple of days, maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”
When asked if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had issued any instructions regarding the reopening of educational institutions, Khandker Anwarul Islam said: “Strong action [mobile court operations] is being taken in Khulna division. The prime minister appreciated this. We must stay strict to an extent.”
He also urged journalists to raise more awareness of Covid-19 and ensure that people kept paying attention to the infection.
