The University of Dhaka (DU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) are yet again the only two Bangladeshi universities to feature in the top 1,000 list of the QS World University Rankings this year.
The two universities featured in the last 200 of the top universities list of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world rankings, published on Wednesday.

The QS, earlier known as Times Higher Education, a UK-education and research institute, ranks universities annually on the basis of six criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty and student ratio, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.
Among the ranking-determining indicators, academic reputation is determined by an academic survey conducted by QS Rankings, which polled more than 94,000 experts on the quality of education and research. Reputation in the job market is determined by a job-survey conducted by QS, where about 45,000 employers are asked to select the most competitive, innovative and effective graduates from any of the universities.
This year, Buet's position in the job market has improved, compared to last year. Buet ranked 415 in this category, whereas, in 2019, it stood at 437.
Meanwhile, eight Indian universities and three Pakistani universities also made the list. The top three Indian universities in the top-200 on the list are Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, and IIT Delhi.
No other universities from the other South Asian countries featured in the list.
The QS Rankings did not mention the scores or exact ranking of DU and Buet.
Among other universities from Asia, 51 from China, 41 from Japan, 20 from Malaysia, 10 from Saudi Arabia, 5 from Iran, 6 from Israel, and 3 from Singapore made the top 1,000 in QS Ranking.
From Europe, 45 universities from Germany, 36 from Italy, 28 from France, 13 from the Netherlands and nine from Finland featured in the list.
A total of 151 universities from the United States made the list, of which five are in the top ten. 84 universities from the UK made the top-1,000, including four in top ten.
The teacher-student ratio index shows the number of students per teacher in a university. The research-citation indicator shows the research work of last 5-years including, published research paper, citations, the total number of teachers of the university. The ability of a university to attract foreign teachers and students is measured by the international teacher ratio and the international student ratio.
