The prime minister’s International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi urged students to put their privilege of attaining an education to use and contribute to society.
He made the statement during his speech at the The Daily Star Awards held at Mirpur Indoor Stadium on Saturday morning.
Rizvi said: “Students are privileged because they are educated. They are the elite. Therefore, I think it is their responsibility to contribute to society.”
“I do not use the word elite with a negative connotation. It means students are the best members of society because they have knowledge,” he explained.
He said a student's ultimate goal was not to just get a certificate and a job, but to also discipline their minds and build their individual identities.
Quoting statistics, he added that students often choose a profession which is completely different from their academics and so it did not matter which profession someone belonged to.
According to Rizvi, all that mattered was whether students were making a proper contribution to society.
He also said students should not forget the people who helped them to get to where they were, namely parents and teachers, and said it was their responsibility to help others in the same manner.
“Students should also try to participate in global educational platform as it is more integrated and valued more,” he added.
Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology also spoke at the event:
“Life should have two precise goals – to enjoy life fully and to facilitate others for the enjoyment of theirs.”
He also advised the students to learn Bangla with more dedication.
