DU students give memo to VC demanding DUCSU election

Update : 25 Sep 2017, 11:35 PM
A section of Dhaka University students have submitted a memorandum to the newly appointed vice chancellor with a plea to undertake an immediate initiative to arrange the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) election. A three-member delegation met DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman at his office on Monday. Masud Al Mahdi, coordinator of the movement, told the Dhaka Tribune: "Students are being deprived of their due rights because of the dysfunctional DUCSU and the absence of any student representatives in the university’s senate." Demanding an immediate election of the university’s central students union, Masud further said: "Without the student union poll it is impossible to ensure a democratic atmosphere on campus." DU unit Chhatra Federation President Umme Habiba Benojir said there should have been elected student representatives in the Senate as per Dhaka University Order 1973, but the positions have remained vacant for last 27 years. The students declared that they would continue their protests until their demand is met. Earlier on July 30, public outcry was sparked when a group of DU students demanding DUCSU elections scuffled with teachers in front of university’s Senate building.
