Xi's visit aggravates Dhaka traffic

Update : 14 Oct 2016, 10:32 PM

Security measures taken to ensure the Chinese president's visit has clogged Dhaka's streets, causing tailbacks in different parts despite the low weekend traffic.

The Dhaka Tribune found that no vehicles were being permitted on a number of roads.

For commuters headed to Uttara via Mirpur, police had stopped all vehicles at ECB Square in Mirpur. The tailback is reported to have stretched till Purobi Cinema Hall.

Pedestrians took off on foot and a Dhaka Tribune staff walked till Hotel Radisson Blu Water Garden where pedestrians were impeded as well.

It was reported that thousands of people were stranded on the roads as they could neither turn back as the crowd grew, nor could they move towards Uttara.

Bijoy Shoroni was as stagnant as ever with reports of people waiting in traffic jams for well over an hour without any signs of improvement. Here, like Mirpur, many passengers disembarked and took off on foot, a Dhaka Tribune staff who was among the crowd reported.

More tailbacks have been reported in Mohakhali-Kakoli, the entirety of New Elephant Road from Science Lab to Shahbagh, the whole stretch of Panthapath, and Tejgaon to Kakrail via Captain Mansur Ali Avenue.

Vehicles and pedestrains were barred from getting on to the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue from the Prime Minister's Office to Shahbagh. The entire stretch of the road was reported to be devoid of any traffic.

As of 10pm Friday night, bypass routes between Uttara and Mirpur via Beribadh was packed tightly.
