British Council unveils memorial in honour of 8 Bangladeshi policemen

The British Council has unveiled a memorial in honour of eight Bangladeshi police personnel who sacrificed their lives to protect the council on March 25, 1971. British Council Chief Executive Ciar n Devane, Regional Director of South Asia Mark Stephens and Director Bangladesh Barbara Wickham unveiled the memorial on council premises Thursday morning. Barbara Wickham said: "One of things we knew, the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK were very active in 1970 and we worked for many years to find out more information about the role of UK in Bangladesh's creation." She said with the help of research they discovered about the eight Bangladeshis who sacrificed their lives after Pakistani occupation forces attacked the council on 25 March, 1971. "We are still working on how we can get the information about their names. So, we are continuing the journey to discover it," the country director added. She said through the unveiling of the memorial, the British Council wished to express their sincere gratitude to the eight brave guards who sacrificed their lives to protect the British Council. While addressing, Ciar n Devane said, "British Council plays an important role in the exchange of ideas, knowledge and discovery between Bangladesh and the UK.
