Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahid Uddin Swapon on Thursday said the government is working continuously to strengthen media freedom and advance reforms in the sector through consultations with stakeholders.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a workshop held at the InterContinental Dhaka to formulate the outline of the proposed National Media Commission.
Swapon said the initiative was the first of its kind in the country's history, bringing all media stakeholders onto a common platform. He expressed hope that it would have a positive and long-term impact on the sector.
He said the government would act as a coordinator in the ongoing process and that the initiative would help develop a roadmap for necessary reforms in the media sector.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury said no person or institution was beyond making mistakes.
“Responsible and constructive journalism is needed to highlight the government's errors and shortcomings so that there is room for correction,” he said.
Journalists, editors, media experts, representatives of various media stakeholders, and other concerned individuals took part in the workshop.
The participants exchanged views on the structure and functioning of the proposed National Media Commission.
