Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Saturday called for the formulation of a realistic National Action Plan to tackle fake news, misinformation and emerging digital security risks in Bangladesh, stressing the need for effective solutions backed by technology-driven implementation.
Speaking as the chief guest at a roundtable titled “Policy, Technology and Accountability in Combating Fake News in Bangladesh” at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka, the minister said identifying problems alone is no longer sufficient and that the country must now focus on practical and sustainable solutions. The event was organized by the Jatiyatabadi ICT Forum.
Swapon said policymakers need to strengthen their knowledge and capacity to address the growing challenges posed by fake news and misinformation. A robust policy framework, combined with technology-based enforcement mechanisms, could play a vital role in containing the spread of false information, he added.
The minister also cautioned that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) could have far-reaching impacts on the economy, employment and social structures. While emphasizing the positive potential of technology, he underscored the importance of managing associated risks.
He noted that national security concerns now extend beyond traditional border protection to include digital infrastructure and data security, calling for stronger cybersecurity measures alongside efforts to enhance the country's digital capabilities.
Highlighting the government's efforts to involve more experts in policymaking, Swapon said modern challenges require knowledge-based and data-driven decision-making.
Addressing technology professionals at the event, he urged them to move beyond discussions and focus on actionable recommendations.
“Extensive discussions have already taken place on the challenges. Now is the time to present practical solutions. A clear draft of a National Action Plan should be prepared and submitted without delay,” he said.
The minister expressed hope that such initiatives would help build a secure, technology-driven and inclusive Digital Bangladesh.
Among those present at the roundtable were Engineer Shahrin Islam Tuhin, A K M Wahiduzzaman, and experts from the fields of information technology, cybersecurity, media and public policy.
