A total of 26 cattle markets will be set up in the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, with 13 under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 13 under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Most of the markets have already been leased, according to city corporation sources.
Authorities said cattle trading will officially continue for five days, including Eid day. However, traders often begin operations four to five days earlier than the scheduled period.
Markets under DSCC
DSCC will set up 12 temporary cattle markets at fields, vacant plots and roads across the city.
Markets will be set up on the vacant land beside the Postogola crematorium on the banks of the Buriganga River and along both sides of the Dholaikhal road near Sadek Hossain Khoka Field.
Other designated locations include vacant land at North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club, Rahmatganj Club, Amulia Model Town and both sides of the Shyampur-Kadamtali truck stand road.
Temporary cattle markets will also be set up in Aftabnagar’s Eastern Housing blocks E, F, G and H, Sections 1 and 2, on vacant land beside Sikder Medical, and on unused roadside land from Kajla Bridge to Matuail near the Mridha Bari water pump.
Additional markets will operate from Dayaganj Rail Crossing to Jurain Rail Crossing, near Mostamaji Mor in Banasree Housing, beside Brothers Union Club and near the Golapbag outer staff quarters.
The permanent Sarulia cattle market will not operate this year after the Water Development Board acquired the land. DSCC officials said alternative arrangements are being considered for future Eid markets.
Markets under DNCC
DNCC will operate 12 temporary cattle markets alongside its permanent Gabtoli cattle market.
Temporary markets will be set up on vacant land below the elevated expressway near Khilkhet Bazar, in Eastern Housing of Mirpur Section 6 and at Kalshi Balur Math in Mirpur.
Other locations include vacant land beside Merul Badda kitchen market, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, Iqra Madrasa in East Hajipara and the 40-foot road in Mohammadpur.
Markets will also be set up in Diabari near sectors 16 and 18 of Uttara, from Bhatulia Saheb Ali Madrasa to the Ranabhola sluice gate, in Rahman Nagar near Kanchkura Bazar, beside Mastul Checkpost and near the Sutibhola canal in Bhatara.
City corporations promise strict monitoring
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said authorities have nearly completed the leasing process and warned against setting up markets before the approved time.
“Strict action will be taken if markets are set up outside designated areas or before the scheduled date,” he said.
DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said measures have been taken to ensure orderly cattle trading this year.
“Every year, there are complaints regarding Qurbani markets. This year, we are working to prevent irregularities and public suffering,” he said.
He added that the leasing process is being conducted transparently through open tenders with opportunities for appeal at every stage.
