Law enforcement agencies have intensified patrols across the capital ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, setting up checkpoints at key intersections and searching suspicious individuals and vehicles.
During visits to several areas of Dhaka on Tuesday, police were seen stopping private cars and motorcycles at checkpoints and questioning passengers.
In Shahbagh—considered one of the city’s key points—law enforcers were conducting vehicle searches and verifying documents.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman said checkpoints and searches are being carried out to prevent the movement of illegal items during the election period.
“Our operations have begun to maintain law and order. We are firmly committed to ensuring a fair and peaceful election,” he said.
Similar checkpoints have reportedly been set up in Hatirjheel, Kawran Bazar, Rampura, Farmgate, Mirpur, Banani, Gulshan, Badda and Uttara.
Banani Police Station OC Kazi Rafiq Ahmed said checkpoints have been established at important points under the police station’s jurisdiction, with motorcycles and private vehicles being searched.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division Ibne Mizan said all police stations under the division have been instructed to set up checkpoints and conduct regular patrols.
“We are deploying maximum force to maintain a peaceful voting environment,” he said.
Members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were also seen patrolling various parts of the capital alongside police.
