Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) carried out a special cleanliness and mosquito control campaign as part of its efforts to eliminate Aedes mosquito breeding grounds and raise public awareness.

The drive was conducted on Saturday, in DSCC Region-04, adjacent to Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka, as part of efforts to destroy Aedes mosquito breeding sites and increase public awareness regarding dengue prevention, reports Bangla Tribune.

The secretary of the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, Md Rezaul Maksud Jahidi, was present during the drive, along with DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia.

More than 600 workers from DSCC’s Waste Management and Health Departments, along with members of the local community, participated in the special drive that began in the morning.

As part of the campaign, drains, sewers, and footpaths in Wards 34, 35, 36, 37, 42, and 43 under Region-04 were cleaned, and mosquito repellents were sprayed.

Additionally, a public awareness rally was held with the participation of local residents.

Speaking at the event, Rezaul said: “Public participation is crucial in controlling dengue. Without the involvement of local residents, it is not possible to manage waste and control dengue in a densely populated city like Dhaka. If each of us becomes aware and takes responsibility for cleaning our surroundings, the spread of dengue can be contained.”

He added that the government is formulating the “National Guidelines 2025 for the Prevention of Dengue and Other Mosquito-borne Diseases,” which will clearly define the responsibilities of both the government and the citizens.

Shahjahan said: “This is the fourth phase of our special awareness and mosquito eradication campaign to control dengue. The main goal of this campaign is to engage local citizens and increase public awareness.”

He also mentioned that, alongside the special drives, regular activities have been intensified.

The volume of insecticide used in each fogging machine has been doubled from 30 litres to 60 litres.

In addition, region-based monitoring teams have been formed to ensure the proper application of mosquito repellents.
