After remaining closed for 40 consecutive days, the main gate of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has finally been unlocked by supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain.
On Monday morning, they removed the locks at the Nagar Bhaban, including those of all service-related departments, thereby eliminating any further barriers to the provision of civic services.
On-site observations revealed that while the main gate and various departmental offices have been reopened, several rooms, including that of DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia and some engineers, remain locked.
Although civic services have resumed, public footfall at the Nagar Bhaban remains relatively low.
According to DSCC officials, this is because many residents are not yet aware that services have resumed.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Dr Md Zillur Rahman said that despite the closure of offices, mosquito control and waste management operations continued uninterrupted.
On Sunday, movement coordinator and former secretary Moshiur Rahman urged DSCC officials and employees to return to work.
Following his appeal, regular activities at Nagar Bhaban resumed from Monday morning.
Since May 15, supporters of Ishraque Hossain have been staging a sit-in in front of the city corporation headquarters, demanding that he be sworn in and officially instated as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
On May 14, they locked the main gate of Nagar Bhaban, as well as other service departments under the DSCC.
