With the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, Jagannath University (JnU) observed World Environment Day with a rally and tree plantation program on Thursday.

The Department of Geography and Environment organized the gathering, which marched around the campus and concluded with the planting of various eco-friendly saplings across the university premises.

The day’s program ended with a brief assembly in front of the Rafique Building.

In his inaugural speech, Professor Dr Md Lokman Hossain of the Chemistry Department said: “Wars, violence, and explosions around the world are causing severe environmental damage, accelerating the climate crisis. To protect our environment from such global disasters, we urgently need collective awareness and effective action.”

JnU Proctor Professor Dr Muhammad Tazammol Hoque added: “Environmental crises caused by climate change and pollution require a concerted effort to overcome. Particularly, to combat plastic pollution, we must cultivate a culture of accountability both socially and institutionally.”

Professor of the Botany Department Dr Kazi Shakhawath Hossain, convener of the JnU Tree Plantation Committee, noted: “There is no alternative to planting trees for environmental protection and temperature regulation. Everyone should contribute by planting trees in their own capacity.”

Professor Dr Mohammad Abdul Quader, chair of the Geography and Environment Department, remarked: “All components of the environment are interconnected. Harm to one element affects the whole ecosystem. While eliminating plastic entirely may not be feasible, we must be more responsible in managing its use.”

Teachers, students, and officials from various departments participated in the program.
