Saidur Rahman Sujon, former chairman of Birulia union parishad in Savar, allegedly committed suicide at Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday.

He was found hanging with a towel wrapped around his neck in a cell in the Surjomukhi building of the prison, said Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain.

He was immediately taken to the prison hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead at around 12:30pm, said Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of DMCH police outpost.

Motaher said Sujon had breakfast in the morning. One of the two other inmates in the cell was at court and the other was asleep when the incident occurred.

“Sujon was an accused in several cases and he might have been suffering from depression. A probe committee will be formed to investigate the incident,” he said.

Sujon, arrested in a case under the Special Powers Act of 1974, was facing a total of 15 cases, including one at the International Crimes Tribunal.
