A suspected mugger has been beaten to death in a mob attack while attempting to escape by swimming across the Buriganga River after committing a robbery.
The incident occurred early on Friday in the Swarighat area of Chawkbazar, as confirmed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Golam Sarwar of the Chawkbazar police station, reports Bangla Tribune.
Two others were critically injured and have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Sarwar added.
He said: "At around 5:30am on Friday, four young men were robbing people near the Keraniganj ferry terminal when locals chased them. One managed to escape, while the remaining three jumped into the Buriganga River and swam to the Champatali Ghat in Swarighat, under Chawkbazar police station. There, locals caught them and subjected them to a mob beating."
Sarwar further said: "Police arrived at the scene and rescued the three critically injured individuals. They were initially taken to Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka and later transferred to DMCH as their condition deteriorated. Upon arrival at DMCH, doctors declared one of them dead. His identity remains unknown, but he is estimated to be around 25 years old."
SI Swaib Hasan of Chawkbazar police station added: "While robbing in Keraniganj early in the morning, they were caught by locals and chased. Three of them jumped into the river, but the locals on the opposite bank caught them after hearing the alarm raised by people on this side. Two of the injured muggers are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, with one in critical condition."
Hasan said: "Following the incident, Keraniganj police arrested another member of the mugging gang. He was also seriously injured and has been admitted to DMCH."
The body of the deceased has been sent to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy, the police officer added.
