A memorial ceremony for the former Dhaka University vice-chancellor, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, was organized by the Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) at the Munier Chowdhury Conference Room in TSC on Tuesday.

During the ceremony, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique was remembered for his teaching of idealism and his contributions to creating a violence-free campus.

Dr Md Golam Rahman, former DU professor and Editor of Ajker Patrika, said: "He was an extremely student-friendly and learner-oriented teacher. The idealism he showed in teaching and conducting classes will inspire many today."

Journalist Tarun Sarkar remarked: "The history of Dhaka University is a history of violence. Arefin Siddique freed Dhaka University from that violent environment."

He further said: "Such a peaceful and non-violent period had never existed at Dhaka University before."

The controversial affiliation of seven colleges with DU during Siddique's tenure was also discussed.

Shariful Hasan, associate director of Brac and adjunct faculty of the State University of Bangladesh, claimed that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina "pressured" Siddique to implement the affiliation.

DUFS organized the memorial in recognition of Siddique's 24-year service as the society's moderator from 1996 to 2020.

Current DUFS President Rokonuzzaman Toha said: "Prof Arefin Siddique guided the Dhaka University Film Society through various challenges for 24 long years, helping in every way possible."
