Top criminal Ejaz Bin Alam, 34, who was in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The incident was confirmed by his father Shah Alam, and DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Faruk, reports Bangla Tribune.
Ejaz was undergoing dialysis at DMCH. Despite being out on bail, DB took him into custody on Friday night, Shah Alam said.
The next morning, he was admitted to DMCH and placed in Ward 601 on the sixth floor.
Following his death, his family forcefully took his body from the hospital but later returned it around 9pm. However, police have yet to make an official statement.
According to DB sources, Ejaz was the second-in-command of top criminal Sanjidul Islam Emon. DB Wari Division arrested him on Friday in connection with a case at Mohammadpur police station. He later fell ill at the DB headquarters and was admitted to DMCH.
When contacted, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner of DB (Wari Zonal Team), Md Fazlul Karim, said: "I am busy at the moment. I will speak later. I cannot comment on this now."
Earlier, a joint force arrested Ejaz from Rayer Bazar on Monday and handed him over to the Mohammadpur police station the following day. He was released on bail through the court on Wednesday.
Police sources said Ejaz, after serving a long jail term, was released on bail on August 15. Following his release, he was allegedly involved in extortion, abduction, and issuing death threats across Dhaka.
Recently, he was identified as the main perpetrator behind the attempted murder of a businessman in Elephant Road, where he allegedly shot and hacked the victim.
