Police blocked the Non-Monthly Payment Order (MPO) teachers while attempting to meet the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus near the State Guest House Jamuna.
The incident occurred in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday.
However, the police did not resort to baton charges, and no teachers were injured during the incident.
It was observed that the teachers had been staging a sit-in demonstration in front of the National Press Club for several days.
As part of the ongoing protest, they were supposed to meet the education adviser by 11am on the same day, but since no arrangement was made by the police, they decided to go directly to meet the chief adviser.
However, the police had already set up a water cannon near the Kadam Foara area.
When the teachers approached Kadam Foara, the police obstructed their progress, forcing them to retreat by blowing whistles.
The teachers then returned to the National Press Club and resumed their sit-in.
During the incident, a teacher named Hosne Ara Begum said that they had been staging their protest for a long time.
She accused some corrupt secretaries at the Secretariat for causing the delay in fulfilling their demands.
According to her, the previous education adviser had been misinformed by the secretaries, and as a result, the adviser did not take any action.
They had tried to meet with the education adviser multiple times, and although the assistant secretary listened to their concerns, no action had been taken after one month.
Hosne Ara Begum further mentioned that when they tried to go to the Secretariat the previous day, the police had blocked them.
The Chief Coordinator of the Combined Non-MPO Teachers' Unity Principal Md Dabirul Islam said that the process of including educational institutions in the MPO list is ongoing and applications for MPO inclusion are taken every year.
However, it is unfortunate that no applications have been accepted in the past four years.
He warned that if no applications are taken in 2025, many educational institutions would have to shut down, as no one can continue to work without pay for 20-25 years.
He emphasized that the social status and the immense suffering of non-MPO teachers and staff should be considered.
He urged that all conditions in the MPO Policy 2021 be abolished and all non-MPO institutions should be included in the MPO list, thereby ending the long-standing hardship of teachers.
