Dhaka University students have formed anti-rape platform and pressed the state of 24-hour ultimatum to execute the rapists of an eight-year-old in Magura.

They also pressed the demand for the formation of special tribunal to investigate rape cases within one month during a rally held in the early hours of Sunday.

The DU students placed these demands at midnight, after female students came marching out from several dormitories to the Raju Memorial Sculpture of TSC.

The protest took place following the rape of an eight-year-old girl while visiting her sister's in-laws in Magura.

Students from DU's Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall and Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall began a sit-in protest at Raju Memorial Sculpture, after marching from their halls at 12:40am on Sunday.

Later, students from Begum Ruqayyah Hall and Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall joined the sit-in along with residents of Amar Ekushey Hall and Shamsunnahar Hall at 1:16am.

The sit-in program expanded as the residents of other female and male dormitories joined with separate rallies.

Students chanted slogans like “Justice, Justice, We Want Justice”, “We Want Justice, Hang the Rapist,” etc.

Students also expressed anger toward the Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, for being unable to handle the law and order situation.

Abu Baker Majumdar, convener of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Democratic Student Council (BDSC) said: “We've been witnessing a culture of 'impunity' in this country for a long time. We cannot 'allow' this to continue.”

"The home affairs adviser has completely failed to control the situation in the country. We demand his resignation," he added.
