A group of students and people raided the residence of former lawmaker Tanveer Imam in Dhaka’s Gulshan around midnight on Tuesday, alleging the presence of illegal arms, drugs and large sums of money.
The raid took place at House 8I on Road 81 in Gulshan 2. No law enforcement officers were initially seen at the scene, though journalists from various media outlets were present and broadcast the incident live.
Witnesses said there was an announcement on social media and news platforms around 11:30pm, of a raid on Tanveer’s house.
By midnight, over 100 students and civilians had gathered near Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan 2 before marching to the residence.
A security guard attempted to block the crowd, but some students climbed over the gate and opened it for the rest.
The crowd then entered the house and searched every room, opening suitcases, drawers and safes, according to witnesses.
About 30 minutes after the raid began, Gulshan police arrived at the scene, followed by a large presence of military personnel outside the house.
Rajib, a student representative, told reporters they had received “confidential information” about illegal arms, drugs and cash being stored at the house.
However, no such items were found during the search.
Police questioned the crowd about their actions and gradually dispersed them.
Officers later inspected the house but found no illegal materials.
None of Tanveer’s family members were present there during the raid. Only house staff and security guards were found inside, according to local reports.
The police did not release an official statement on the incident.
Tanveer Imam, a former lawmaker from Sirajganj-4 and son of the late HT Imam, political adviser to ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was previously arrested in a case related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He also stands accused of accumulating illegal wealth and engaging in illicit activities.
