Following police tear gas deployment, recommended primary school teachers and job seekers registered under the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) vacated the streets of Shahbagh on Monday afternoon, which resulted in the resumption of normal traffic flow.
Earlier, at around 1:30pm, the demonstrators had blocked the roads at Shahbagh, staging a sit-in for nearly two hours.
Tensions escalated as police and protesters engaged in repeated confrontations.
Despite police baton charges, the protesters repeatedly regrouped on the road.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that law enforcement personnel deployed water cannons at intervals to disperse the crowd.
Additionally, several sound grenades were detonated, and forceful baton charges were carried out.
Multiple individuals were seen being detained during the clashes.
As the police crackdown intensified, male protesters stepped aside, allowing female demonstrators to remain on the road.
Many positioned themselves nearby to evade arrest while continuing to encourage their female counterparts.
Several protesters sustained injuries from police baton charges, while some female demonstrators reportedly fell ill after exposure to water from the police water cannons.
