7 college students demand new university framework within 15 days

Another 24-hour ultimatum issued to meet injured students urgently

Update : 28 Jan 2025, 10:22 PM

Students of Dhaka University affiliated seven colleges believe the "ultimate" solution is yet to be reached and have demanded a new university's "framework" be prepared within 15 days, with university activities "inaugurated" within one month through a "presidential ordinance".

The students emphasized that no solution is "possible" without ensuring "justice" for those "involved", including DU Pro-VC (Academic) Mamun Ahmed while taking into account the well-being of their 'injured' peers.

Additional demands include continuing all academic year examinations as per the previously announced routine and commencing university activities with students from all academic years incorporated into the new university structure.

To address the ongoing crisis, the students proposed a roundtable discussion within two days involving student representatives, the Ministry of Education, a high-level expert committee, principals of the seven colleges, and other relevant stakeholders.

These demands were made on 28 January at around 7:45pm at Dhaka College Shaheed Minar on Tuesday.

Jakaria Bari, a student of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam College, read out the demands on behalf of the 7 College students.

He extended formal thanks to Dhaka University authorities for recognizing the "legitimacy" of their demands and deciding to cancel the affiliation.

The students issued another 24-hour ultimatum, urging the "higher authorities" to meet with the 'injured' students.

"Whatever decision is made after consulting all representatives of the seven colleges and the injured students will be considered final," said Abdur Rahman.

Regarding the blockade of Dhaka University buses in front of Dhaka College, they warned this could have "negative" consequences for students and potentially destabilize the country.

"Therefore, we are withdrawing such anti-public and anti-student programs, as conveyed during discussions with the Ministry of Education today," said Abdur Rahman, a Dhaka College student and representative of the 7 College students.
