Police blocked a march towards Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus' residence, organized by families of victims of the BDR massacre, along with thousands of students and citizens, near Shahbagh Police Station on Wednesday.
Later, a delegation was allowed to proceed with a memorandum containing their demands, while the remaining participants continued their sit-in protest at the location.
Due to the demonstration, vehicular movement from Shahbagh to TSC was halted, and the disruption impacted nearby roads, causing traffic to slow significantly.
This protest is part of a series of programs announced over the past few days by the executive committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, led by former coordinator Mahin Sarkar. As part of these activities, Mahin had earlier declared the march to the chief adviser's residence for Wednesday.
Speaking to the protesters at Shahbagh, it was revealed that BDR members and their families had gathered from across the country in response to Mahin Sarkar's call. They demanded the immediate release of detained BDR personnel involved in the case, reinstatement of jobs for those dismissed without reason, and justice for the families affected.
The protesters began assembling in front of the Central Shaheed Minar earlier in the day. By noon, thousands of people started marching towards the chief adviser's residence but were stopped by law enforcement at Shahbagh.
Following discussions with the authorities, a delegation was allowed to proceed to submit their memorandum.
Before heading to the residence, Mahin Sarkar addressed the crowd through a microphone, urging everyone to remain calm.
He said: “Those of you who have gathered here, please stay peaceful. A delegation will go to the chief adviser's residence to submit our memorandum. Until we return, please continue your sit-in protest here. Once we return, we will share our decision, and we hope you will act accordingly."
