The High Court's 2012 ruling declaring the accused's expulsion illegal will also be challenged

Nearly six years after the verdict in the Abu Bakar murder case, Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court.

This information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Public Relations Office of Dhaka University on Wednesday.

The release said that DU authorities have decided to appeal to the Supreme Court regarding the verdict concerning those accused in the murder of meritorious student Abu Bakar, in the interest of ensuring justice.

It further mentioned that the university authorities have decided to appeal to the Supreme Court against the High Court's ruling, which declared the expulsion orders of the accused students illegal. This decision was made in the interest of fairness and justice.

Notably, in 2010, a clash erupted between two factions of a student organization at Sir AF Rahman Hall. During the incident, Md Abu Bakar Siddique, a third-year student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, was severely injured while in his room and later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Following this incident, a syndicate meeting held on March 2, 2010, temporarily expelled ten students from Dhaka University for their alleged involvement in the clash.

In 2018, the case verdict stated that no one had murdered Abu Bakar, and all accused were acquitted. Abu Bakar’s family and legal counsel were not informed about the verdict. The family learned about it six months later through media reports.

Two of the expelled students filed separate writ petitions in the High Court Division against the expulsion orders issued by the university authorities. Consequently, in 2012, the High Court Division declared the expulsion orders illegal and ruled in favor of the petitioners. Recently, Dhaka University authorities have decided to appeal this ruling in the Supreme Court.
