What will happen at Shaheed Minar on Tuesday?

Hasnat Abdullah says people will gather at the Shaheed Minar on Tuesday to push for the establishment of a new Bangladesh based on people's aspirations

Update : 29 Dec 2024, 10:22 PM

A proclamation of a ‘New Bangladesh’ will be announced at the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday where the current constitution of Bangladesh, written in 1972 will be ‘buried,’ said Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

"We demand that the Mujibbadi Constitution be declared obsolete. The grave of the Mujibbadi Constitution of 1972 will be created at the same place where the one-point declaration was announced. We hope that the July Revolution Declaration will declare the Nazi-like Awami League irrelevant in Bangladesh,” he said at a press conference in the capital on Sunday.

Hasnat said people will gather at the Shaheed Minar on Tuesday to push for the construction of a new Bangladesh based on people's aspirations.

Another key coordinator of the student platform, Sarjis Alam, said: "The July Revolution Declaration would serve as a document of historical importance, marking a distinction between the old system that people rejected and new system that will be implemented. It will guide the new leadership of the country and reflect the hopes and aspirations of people."

He noted that the declaration should have been made earlier, but due to lack of support from various sectors, the state was not able to move forward, reported UNB.

Another coordinator, Abdul Hannan Masud, said the Awami League, would be declared irrelevant, and the aspirations of people for a new Bangladesh would be announced on December 31.

"Drafts of the declaration have already been sent to various political parties. On December 31, the declaration will be read out, and people from all walks of life, including families of martyrs and political parties supporting the people's uprising, will gather at the Shaheed Minar," he said.

“From our platform, we will announce the proclamation of the July Revolution. It is the government’s responsibility to incorporate it into the constitution and establish the ‘second republic,” he added.

Sarjis Alam said: “We believe this proclamation will capture the aspirations of the anti-fascist people of the country, just as our July Revolution did,” he said.

The leaders also confirmed that neither the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement nor the Jatiya Nagorik Committee would transform into a political party.

“Both platforms symbolize the unity of the July Revolution. Neither of them will ever become a political party,” said Sarjis Alam, adding that a new political party would be formed under a different name.

Umama Fatema, spokesperson for the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, elaborated on the proclamation: “We will announce through the proclamation how and why the July Revolution took place, why we had to adopt a single-point demand instead of the initial nine-point demand, and what the students and people aspired to achieve through the revolution.”

“The proclamation does not belong to any particular party. It will formally recognize the people's uprising that led to the repeal of the constitution during the revolution,” said Hasnat Abdullah.
