To tackle the worsening traffic congestion in Dhaka, retired members of the armed forces and various law enforcement agencies are being engaged.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to utilize retired personnel who previously worked in traffic management to assist in community policing efforts, according to Prothom Alo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has already begun compiling a list of retired members from traffic divisions across different forces.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that retired personnel from government forces aged under 50 would be recalled for this initiative.
The list includes personnel from the Armed Forces Division, Police Headquarters, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar and VDP, the Bangladesh Navy, and the Air Force.
This decision was made during the fourth meeting of the Advisory Council on Law and Order, held on November 24.
DMP has been assigned the responsibility of preparing this list.
A senior official from the Home Ministry mentioned that the retired personnel would be hired on a temporary, daily-wage basis.
Following the fall of the Awami League government due to the student-led uprising on August 5, traffic mismanagement and disorder have escalated in the capital.
In many areas, traffic police are absent from duty, especially in the evenings, resulting in severe congestion.
To address this, the interim government has trained 700 students in traffic management, some of whom have already been hired part-time in certain areas.
Now, retired members of law enforcement agencies are being added to these efforts to control traffic in Dhaka.
