The students have put forth three key demands

Update : 04 Nov 2024, 07:27 PM

The general students of Jagannath University (JnU), on Monday, blocked the Tanti bazar intersection in Old Dhaka with a three-point demand.

Their first demand is taking action against the corrupt project director appointed during the fascist regime.

Secondly, they insisted that an efficient army officer be appointed as the project director within seven days and that an announcement be made regarding the handover of the second campus to the army, accompanied by a clear outline of the handover process on a priority basis.

Finally, they demanded immediate measures to acquire the remaining 11 acres of land and the cancellation of all immoral agreements made during the dictatorship concerning the old campus.

Rakib, a student from the Botany Department of Jagannath University, said: "The second campus is our moral right. We don't have a campus. We've been hearing for a long time that the campus is in progress, but there has been no actual work."

Nur Novi, a university student, said: "The administration is doing its job, but where a complete project typically takes one to two years, this work has been ongoing for years without completion. There has been no progress in the project. The work on this campus should be handed over to the army immediately, and the project should be completed soon."

Tausif Mahmud Sohan, a student in the physics department, said: "We will initiate a more vigorous movement if the education ministry does not accept our demands by today."

Meanwhile, the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Rezaul Karim, found himself caught in the traffic caused by the students' movement.

The vice-chancellor said: "It's not as simple as saying that the work will be done; it requires a lengthy processing time."
