Tensions have risen around Bangabhaban, the president’s residence, following protests from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which has issued a five-point demand, including the resignation of President Mohammed Sahabuddin.
The protesters have given an ultimatum for their demands to be met by Thursday.
Various other organizations held demonstrations and sit-in programs under different banners near Bangabhaban on Tuesday, leading to heightened security measures in the area.
As of Wednesday morning, security has been significantly increased around Bangabhaban.
Law enforcement units, including members of the police, army, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were seen stationed to maintain order.
Armoured personnel carriers (APCs), water cannons, and barbed wire security fences were also deployed.
Officers from various units of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) were visible around the area.
However, no protesters were seen in front of Bangabhaban in the morning. The night before, demonstrators had attempted to breach the barricades in front of the president’s residence but were dispersed after security forces intervened, using batons and sound grenades.
Reports indicated that three individuals, including two students, were injured during the clash.
Around 300 to 400 protesters had gathered in an attempt to enter Bangabhaban.
Later that night, protesters made another attempt to gather near Bangabhaban but left the area around 2:30am, issuing an ultimatum for their demands to be met by Thursday.
