Downpour floods Dhaka streets, leaves commuters struggling

Waterlogged roads and a reduced number of vehicles have caused major inconveniences

Update : 03 Oct 2024, 10:36 AM

Amid heavy rains that began on Wednesday evening, residents of the capital faced widespread suffering as downpours disrupted daily life.

The overnight rain flooded numerous areas of the city, leaving many streets and alleyways submerged.

Light rain continues in parts of the city, compounding the difficulties of those trying to go about their day.

Waterlogged roads and a reduced number of vehicles have caused major inconveniences, especially for office-goers and students.

Rainwater has accumulated in key areas like Shantinagar, Bailey Road, Dhanmondi, and most parts of Old Dhaka.

Jitu Sarkar, a student of Ideal School, said: "It started raining in the evening and continued through the night. I could not find transport in the morning, and when I finally did, the fare was double. Many others, like me, had to brave the rain with umbrellas and raincoats."

Ayan Ahmed, a student of Universal Tutorial School, expressed similar frustration. "The rain has not stopped. It looks like it will continue all day. I had to wade through knee-deep water to get to school, wearing a raincoat."

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its 9am bulletin on Thursday said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.

Day and night temperatures may fall by 1-3°C over the country.
