The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has announced a countrywide “Shahidi March” for Thursday to mark one month since the fall of the Awami League government amid a mass uprising.
One of the coordinators of the movement, Sarjis Alam, announced the program during a press conference at Dhaka University on Wednesday.
Sarjis said across the country, from unions to metropolitan areas, the march would honour the memory of those martyred and injured during the movement.
He added that the march in Dhaka would start at 3pm in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus.
The march will then proceed through Nilkhet, New Market, Kalabagan, Mirpur Road, Manik Mia Avenue and past the Jatiya Sangsad, continuing through Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh and returning to the Raju Memorial Sculpture, concluding at the Shaheed Minar.
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, under which students began protesting for reforms to the government job quota system in early July, gained momentum after attacks by pro-government groups and law enforcement, eventually evolving into a movement for the government's overthrow.
Facing intense protests, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5, ending the Awami League’s nearly 16-year-long rule.
Three days after the fall of the Awami League government, on August 8, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus was sworn in.
