Confusion arose on Tuesday over the reported arrest of Mohammad A Arafat, the former state minister for information and broadcasting, following conflicting statements from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and various media outlets.
Initial reports from several news organizations, including the Dhaka Tribune, claimed that Arafat had been arrested in the Gulshan area.
However, the DMP has denied these claims.
“We do not have any such information of him being arrested,” said Obaidur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP’s media wing.
A separate DMP official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a team from the Detective Branch of the DMP conducted a raid at Arafat’s residence in Gulshan.
“But he was not found there,” the official added.
The former state minister is accused in multiple cases, including one involving the death of Md Tahidul Islam, a student from Kabi Nazrul Govt College, during a recent student movement.
As of now, no official confirmation of Arafat’s arrest has been provided by the DMP, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.
