A case has been filed against five individuals, including Md Iqbal Hossain, the deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Wari Division, over the death of the son of a sub-inspector.

Parvin Akhter, the mother of the deceased Imam Hasan Taim, filed the case in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shakil Ahmed in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The court recorded the plaintiff’s statement and instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to carry out an investigation.

Taim, a student of Narayanganj Government Adomjee Nagar MW College and the son of Rajarbagh Police Lines SI Md Moynal Hossain Bhuiyan, was fatally shot in the Jatrabari area of Dhaka during the recent student protests.

Also accused in the case are Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Shakil Mohammad Shamim, Assistant Commissioner (AC) Tanzil Ahmed, Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain and SI Shahadat Ali.

According to the case statement, on July 20, amid the student movement, when a curfew was relaxed from noon to 2pm, Taim went to have tea in the Kazla area of Jatrabari with two friends.

Some quota reform protesters were demonstrating nearby.

The plaintiff alleged that following orders from Iqbal, Shamim and Tanzil, Zakir and his team had fired tear gas shells, sound grenades, rubber bullets and live rounds at the demonstrators.

Fearing for their lives, the students began to flee in different directions.

Taim and his two friends took shelter inside a tea shop, pulling down its shutter, which was still partially open.

The case dossier says police pulled them out from under the shutter. “Zakir Hossain then ordered them to run if they wanted to avoid being shot. Taim ran first, but Zakir Hossain fired at him. Taim succumbed to his injuries on the spot.”
