In a disturbing incident in the capital, a student on traffic duty has fallen ill after consuming food that he claims was poisoned.
The incident occurred in the Manda area on Wednesday evening.
Md Farhad Uddin, a second-semester BBA student at JNRF University of Management Sciences (JUMS), was on duty managing traffic when an unidentified individual handed him a packet of food.
After consuming the food later that night, Farhad experienced severe symptoms and was rushed to Mugda General Hospital.
According to hospital sources, Farhad was admitted to Unit-3 of the Medicine Department.
By Thursday morning, he had left the hospital voluntarily.
A video circulating on social media shows Farhad with foam coming from his mouth as he is transported by rickshaw to the hospital.
A youth accompanying Farhad said: “He was performing traffic duty when an unknown person gave him biryani. There was poison in the biryani. The youth also showed a packet of the biryani. Passersby then quickly took him to the hospital.”
Farhad said: “While managing traffic in front of Mugda Hospital, a person gave a food packet to me and five others. After eating some of the food at home that night, I became ill. Foam came out of my mouth, and my body convulsed.”
Farhad added that he stays in a bachelor’s house in Manda. After falling ill, neighbors transported him to the emergency department at Mugda General Hospital.
He was admitted overnight and left the hospital on the morning of August 15.
Dr Tajvir Rahim, who was on duty in the emergency department at Mugda General Hospital, said: “At 11:55pm on Wednesday, a young man arrived with foam in his mouth and had vomited several times. He claimed food poisoning. We cleaned his stomach and admitted him to the medicine department.”
When asked about the presence of poison in the food, Dr Tajvir said: “It is not possible to confirm the presence of poison without testing the food. Based on the patient’s claim, we cleaned his stomach and referred him to the medicine department.”
