Thousands gathered for a protest organized by the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement on Saturday around 12pm at various locations in and around the Jatrabari area, Dhaka.
During the demonstration, there was no police presence observed in the area.
The protesters demanded justice for victims and chanted slogans against the government.
Student activist Ahsan Habib said: “Everyone has witnessed how goons from the Chhatra league attacked during a peaceful campus assembly. If we return to the campus, they will attack us again. We will not leave the streets and return to the campus until our safety is assured.”
Local resident Siddiqur Rahman, who also attended the protest, said: “I’m not only a local resident but also a guardian. My daughter is studying at Habibullah Bahar University, and my son is at Suhrawardy College.
“They are protesting in the streets. As a father, I cannot stay at home. That’s why I’ve joined the protest.”
He appealed to the police, said: “I urge the police not to leave any mother grieving and not to obstruct the students' legitimate protest.”
