Update : 03 Aug 2024, 08:30 PM

Students from various colleges and universities staged a nearly four-hour demonstration at Mirpur 10 Circle on Saturday, protesting against violence, deaths, and mass arrests linked to the quota reform movement.

The protest, which began around 12:30pm, saw students assemble at 10 Number Circle and continued until around 4:30pm, when they began to disperse after announcing their next actions.

During the demonstration, traffic on roads through Mirpur 10 was redirected via Mirpur 2. Normal traffic flow resumed at 4:50pm following the end of the protest.

In response to the protest, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) maintained a vigilant presence in the area.

Officers, including the deputy commissioner (DC), assistant deputy commissioner (ADC), and officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station, discussed with the protesters at 1:15pm.

They urged the students to remain peaceful and to be on guard against any attempts to incite violence by outsiders.

The crowd grew significantly after 2pm, with students from various colleges joining in large groups.

Many parents also attended the protest to ensure the safety of their children.

Parents reported they had to bring their children to the demonstration as they were unable to keep them at home.

Throughout the protest, police and BGB personnel remained at their posts. Initially, Awami League leaders and activists were present at Mirpur Original 10 but later withdrew from the area.

Earlier on Friday night, the coordinators of the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement had announced nationwide protests for Saturday.

They called for demonstrations to condemn attacks on peaceful student and citizen movements, seek justice for recent killings, and push for their nine-point demands.

The movement urged the public to organize and participate in the protests across local areas.
