As students demanding quota reform in government jobs carried out their Bangla Blockade on Wednesday, blocking roads and causing inconvenience to the general public, the metro rail remained operational, unaffected by the protest.
But with trying to reach their destinations by metro rail, it led to a significant increase in the number of passengers at metro stations.
Students, aiming to block roads from morning to evening, positioned themselves on various roads in Dhaka, including Agargaon, Farmgate, Kawran Bazar, Banglamotor, Shahbagh, and Paltan, disrupting vehicular movement.
People with urgent needs flocked to metro rail stations, making them overcrowded.
To manage the crowd, entrances to several busy stations, including Agargaon and Kawran Bazar, were temporarily closed.
Md Millat Amin, who came to pick up his child from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Boys' School in Agargaon from Farmgate, said it was very difficult to get on the metro rail, and it was so crowded that people were almost on top of each other.
Another passenger, Tahmina Akter, who travelled from Mirpur 10 to Agargaon, said she could not get on the first train but managed to get on the next one.
Not only regular metro rail passengers but also residents from nearby areas were coming to metro rail stations by rickshaw or on foot to try to reach their destinations.
At Agargaon station, the west gate was closed, causing many to return, with some expressing frustration.
