To mitigate traffic congestion and reduce road accidents during Eid, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has announced a prohibition on small city buses travelling outside Dhaka this year.

He made this announcement while addressing reporters after inspecting the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex at the Panthpath intersection in the capital on Tuesday.

Expressing concern over the rise in road accidents, particularly on highways where motorcycles contribute to more than half of the incidents, Habibur emphasized safety measures. As part of these measures, policemen have been instructed not to travel home on motorcycles during Eid to minimize risks.

He also urged the public to refrain from using motorcycles on highways during the festival to prevent accidents.

Habibur highlighted the enforcement of stringent measures to curb the presence of unfit vehicles on the roads. Bus owners have been warned against operating vehicles that do not meet safety standards, with legal actions stipulated for violations of traffic laws.

Moreover, he addressed the issue of inadequate parking facilities in Dhaka, especially during Eid shopping rushes, which leads to vehicles being parked on roads, exacerbating traffic congestion.

He cautioned that vehicles parked illegally would face consequences per traffic regulations and directed market authorities to enhance provisions for adequate parking spaces.
