The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken extensive security measures for the month-long Ekushey Book Fair, which starts on Thursday, expecting an average of 100,000 attendees every day.

Speaking at a press conference at Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday, DMP chief Habibur Rahman said a control room had been set up to monitor the fair through CCTV cameras.

“The surrounding areas will be monitored at all times,” he said, adding that there would be metal detectors and police would carry out searches.

A Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team would remain in a state of alert to prevent militant attacks or any untoward incidents, the DMP commissioner said.

Plainclothesmen and detectives would also be on duty, he added.

"We will have different types of patrolling: drone patrolling, cyber patrolling, etc. There will also be a dog squad and a watch tower for overall security at the fair."

Apart from security measures, there would be a breastfeeding corner for mothers and a lost and found centre for children, Habibur said. Besides, there would be clean drinking water for the attendees, he added.

Habibur warned of action if any book was published which might hurt religious sentiments or harm law and order.

The DMP chief said the metro rail would be helpful for those looking to visit the fair.

There were no threats of any militant activities surrounding the fair, he said, adding that the DMP had necessary measures regardless considering past incidents.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Poro boi goro desh, Bangabandhur Bangladesh.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the fair at 3pm on Thursday.
