Two IBGE scientists receive BSMRAU research award

Two scientists of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University's Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (IBGE) Prof Dr Md Tofazzal Islam and Prof Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman have received "BSMRAU Research Award-2023".

This year, for the first time, BSMRAU awarded five teachers for their outstanding contribution to basic research, says a press release issued on Tuesday.

Professor Dr Md Tofazzal Islam has been researching for a long time on the development of probiotic bacteria-rich microbial fertilizers for various crops, rapid detection kit for wheat blast disease using CRISPR method, and development of BLAST resistant varieties. Recently, he revealed the secret of the life of Bangladesh’s national fruit jackfruit.

Professor Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman has identified the important diseases of fish and shrimp in Bangladesh by molecular method, determined the molecular characteristics of microbes by uncovering the secrets of life, their biological management, developed probiotics from domestic sources for fish growth and disease prevention and developed a vaccine for enterococcal infection in tilapia fish.

IBGE's research results are being published in world's leading high impact factor journals. All these publications are contributing significantly in achieving various international rankings of BSMRAU.
