Minority council protests against communal violence in Bangladesh
The Hindus want freedom of speech and the right to practice their religion freely, say speakers at Dhaka protest

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has held nationwide demonstrations in protest of the recent attacks on Hindus during and after Durga Puja celebrations.
The organization held a demonstration at Dhaka’s Shahbag from 6am to 12noon on Saturday. Simultaneous demos were held in several places across the country, including Chittagong and Sylhet, where thousands took part.

“The recent attacks were planned. The attackers’ goal was to incite Hindu-Muslim communal riots,” Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) leader Hasanul Haque Inu told the rally in Shahbag.
Widespread riots had been averted due to the intervention of the Muslim community as well as the law enforcement agencies, said lawmaker Inu, a former information minister.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Iskcon General Secretary Charu Chanda Das said attacks on Hindu establishments is not something new in Bangladesh.
The recent attacks could have been prevented had the perpetrators of previous attacks been brought to justice, he added.
The Hindu leader also urged the government to enact a law specifically for the protection of minorities.
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury called for ensuring justice swiftly.

Terming the recent attacks unacceptable, speakers at Shahbag’s protest said the Hindus want freedom of speech and the right to practice their religion freely.
Taposhi Rani Sarkar, president of Hindu Buddhist Christian Mohila Upaparishad, said there will be no minorities left in Bangladesh if such attacks keep happening.
Various Hindu organizations of the capital took part in Saturday’s protest at Shahbag.
Besides, hunger strikes and protests were reported from different parts of the country, including Sylhet, Sirajganj, Kishoreganj and Tangail.
