Update : 20 Dec 2021, 08:34 PM

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) authorities removed more than 79,000 tons of waste from the city’s canals this year, Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said.

During a meeting on waste management with senior officials at the Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan on Monday, the mayor also claimed that the city dwellers had not faced waterlogging because of the cleaning drives.

“We’ve removed 69,238 tons of floating garbage from the canals in the first 11 months of the current year. Moreover, around 10,000 tons of slug were pulled out of the canals to increase navigability,” he said.

Atiqul Islam said that DNCC officials were carrying out drives on a regular basis to free the canals from illegal grabbers and keep the water clean.

“Soon the canals will be demarcated with the help of the Bangladesh Army,” he added.

The mayor also asked homeowners to install modern septic tanks and soakwells.

“Most of the houses in Dhaka do not have septic tanks and soakwells. Because of this, untreated water is discharged into the drains and canals, thus polluting the environment,” he observed.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza, among others, was present at the meeting.
