Police: Jamaat leaders involved in communal attacks in Gazipur

Police have found the involvement of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader and two other activists during the recent attacks on Durga Puja venues and temples in Gazipur.
On October 14, Jamaat Konabari unit President Rabiul led the attack to desecrate idols along with two other activists and a few staff of a local garment factory, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Zakir Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
A total of 28 people were arrested till Wednesday in three separate cases over vandalizing Hindu idols in three temples at Kashimpur Bazar.
The official said police interrogated 20 of the arrested for two days while seven others have been interrogated for three days. Another arrestee was sent to jail after recording his confessional statement under Section 164.
Police will continue drives to arrest others involved in the incident, the police official added.
Bangladesh has been seeing a streak of communal violence for the past week after news broke on social media about the alleged defamation of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja mandap in Comilla.
At least 72 cases have been initiated in different parts of the country over the attacks and 476 people were arrested till Tuesday.

Kashimpur police Officer in-Charge (OC) Mahbubey Khoda said 150-200 unidentified people had been accused in each of the cases.
On October 14, a group of men armed with sticks barged into the local Radha Gobinda Temple around 7am and vandalized the idols there.
An hour earlier, a family temple at Paschim Para and another temple at Pal Para were also attacked by unidentified men.
