BNP-Jamaat is behind all the unrest occurring in the country now, says information minister

Senior ministers of the ruling Awami League government on Monday continued to point fingers at the BNP and its allies involved in religion-based politics, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, for the recent spate of communal attacks across the country.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the government would soon rebuild the homes razed and looted by the attackers at Pirganj in Rangpur on Sunday night.

“This is an unfortunate incident which took place at Pirganj in Rangpur and those who set fire to these homes are miscreants,” he said, reports UNB.

Some 25 houses were set on fire, and more than 90 houses were looted and vandalized by the miscreants, the minister said.

He further said: “You know, the prime minister has already issued instructions on taking appropriate action regarding those who have been affected.”

Talking to PTI on Sunday, the home minister said that the violence was aimed at fomenting trouble with an eye on the next general elections. He also asserted that Bangladesh would not let the troublemakers succeed in their mission.

"These incidents are aimed at tarnishing the image of our nation and creating tension with an eye on the general election. But we won't allow these forces to succeed," he said.

The minister said: "We are not ruling out the involvement of BNP-Jamaat or any third forces. They could be behind those attacks to halt the progress of our country. This could also be aimed at disturbing peace before the next elections."

The ruling party is set to arrange a series of programs across the country to protest against communal attacks.

Meanwhile, the government on Monday ordered the transfer of six officers with the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP), including Biplob Kumar Sarkar, in charge of Rangpur district; SP of Feni Khandker Nurunnabi; Bijoy Basak, DC of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP); and Sanjoy Sarkar, DC of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader alleged that the BNP had been fuelling communal attacks throughout the country.

“The BNP has now resorted to conspiracy to undermine communal harmony in the country,” he told reporters in Dhaka on Monday, reports BSS.

Quader claimed that there was not a single incident of attack on the Puja venues in the last 12 years. “But the communal forces backed by the BNP carried out mayhem this year across the country in a planned way,” he said.

Urging all to be more careful, the ruling party leader stated that the communal forces were using social media platforms like Facebook to spread propaganda.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been inquiring about the matter since last night (Sunday). The PM is keeping in touch with the local administration and even with us,” he said.

Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud said the violence during the Durga Puja was aimed at destabilizing the country for political purposes.

“A group in Bangladesh has been involved in communal politics and the Comilla incident was again circulated on social networking sites in order to create chaos,” he said, reports UNB.

“BNP-Jamaat is behind all the unrest occurring in the country now," claimed the minister.

He also urged all democratic and secular forces to resist the miscreants.

"It’s very clear that they are doing it to destabilize the country. However, the government has controlled it with a strong hand,” said Hasan.

“Those who were behind the incidents had plans to have these incidents occur throughout the country but failed due to the government’s intervention,” he said.

Talking about the Pirganj incident in Rangpur, Hasan Mahmud said the perpetrators had chosen the place to show the government in a bad light.

Referring to the Chandpur incident, the minister said: “Police opened fire on those who created a chaotic situation in the district. The government has done everything it can do.”

Office Secretary Biplab Barua, also a special aide to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, told Dhaka Tribune that the attacks were part of a conspiracy launched before the Election Commission formation.

He said: “Our party already has given instructions to leaders and activists across the country to protect the people from this type of communal attacks.”

Lawmaker AFM Bahauddin Nasim, a joint general secretary, said: “The recent attacks on the Hindu people are the outcome of the series meetings of the BNP which they conducted recently.”
